Final exam worth 40%

When the final is 40%, the current grade is only 60% of the outcome. A weak standing can still move, and a strong one can still fall.

78% now, goal 85%

needed = (85 − 78 × 0.60) / 0.40 = 95.5%

Open this 40% final. If the final is an 80 instead, the course becomes 78.8%.

The same standing, goal 90%

needed = 108%. Still above 100. A 40% final is not a reset button. For a pass/fail cutoff, use what you need to pass.
