What if I get a zero on the final?

A zero does not make the course a zero. It makes the final’s share of the grade a zero and leaves the rest.

88% now, final worth 20%, score 0

88 × 0.80 + 0 × 0.20 = 70.4%

The course becomes 70.4%. To still finish at 90 you would need 98% on that final. Open the zero and the 90% goal. Read the “If I score this” line for the 70.4, and the big number for the 98 you would need instead.

A zero on a small final hurts less than a zero on a 40% final (78 × 0.60 = 46.8 if you also started at 78).

Steps in the calculator

  1. Open the final grade calculator.
  2. Enter your current grade (88%), your goal (90%) and the final’s weight (20% of the course).
  3. Read the score you need on the final at the top.
  4. Optional: type a score in “If I score this on the final” (0% in this example) to see the course grade it would give you.
