Mexican grades to US GPA

Mexican universities grade from 5 to 10, with 6 as the minimum pass. An 8 average is a respectable record. Enter your promedio to see an estimated 4.0-scale GPA.

Convert a grade

Standards vary by school; follow your target school’s rules.

How the estimate works

The estimate draws straight lines between these points on the “Grade on the 5–10 scale” scale: 6 → 1.0, 8 → 3.0, 8.3 → 3.3, 8.6 → 3.7, 10 → 4.0. The points in the middle come from the published tables below; mapping the lowest pass to 1.0 and the top of the scale to 4.0 is a GradeKite assumption. Values outside the points get no estimate.

From letters to numbers at UNAM

UNAM’s General Examination Regulations express passing grades as the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, with 6 as the minimum to pass a subject. A 5 means “no acreditada” (not passed), and NP marks a student who did not sit the exam. Earlier UNAM records used letters, and the same regulations give their numerical equivalents: MB (Muy Bien) = 10, B (Bien) = 8 and S (Suficiente) = 6; NA has no numerical equivalent. If an old transcript shows letters, convert them that way before averaging.

Most Mexican universities and the public school system use the same 5-to-10 frame, though each institution writes its own rules for rounding and averaging.

What foreign universities publish

The tables agree closely for Mexico. Toronto sets mid-B at 8.0, B+ at 8.3 and A− at 8.6. Oregon State asks for 8 out of 10 or 80% (“Bien”) for its B average. Loughborough puts a UK First at 8.5, a 2:1 at 8 and a 2:2 at 7 for a Licenciatura.

Worked example

Diego’s promedio is 8.5. On Toronto’s anchors it is two-thirds of the way from 8.3 (3.3) to 8.6 (3.7): 3.3 + 0.4 × 2/3 = 3.57, shown as 3.6. Loughborough reads 8.5 as a First, and it clears Oregon State’s 8. Because Toronto’s anchors are only 0.3 apart, small differences in a Mexican average move the estimate a lot: 8.2 gives 3.2, while 8.6 already gives 3.7.

Below 8, the line down to 6 (treated as 1.0) is a GradeKite assumption, not a published equivalence; a 7 estimates at 2.0.

FAQ

Is an 8 a B?

Yes on both Toronto’s and Oregon State’s tables: 8.0 is mid-B (3.0).

My school reports percentages. What do I enter?

Oregon State treats 80% like an 8, so dividing by 10 is a fair approximation. Use your school’s own rule if it prints one.

Do failed subjects count in the promedio?

It depends on the university’s rules. Use the official promedio on your certificate.
