What GPA do I need to reach a 3.5?

A target cumulative can be impossible on a 4.0 scale if too few credits remain. The calculator says when the required GPA is above 4.0.

3.1 after 45 credits

Fifteen credits ahead, target 3.5:

(3.5 × 60 − 3.1 × 45) / 15 = 4.7

4.7 is above a 4.0. Straight A’s (4.0) need this many credits:

(3.5 × (45 + x) − 139.5) / x = 4 → x = 36.

Check: (3.5 × 81 − 139.5) / 36 = 4. Open 36 credits of A work. The line should say the next 36 credits need a 4 GPA, not that the goal is above a 4.0.

Steps in the calculator

  1. Open the GPA calculator.
  2. Add one row per course with its letter and credits: A (3 credits).
  3. Under cumulative GPA, enter your GPA so far (3.1) and the credits behind it (45), then the target (3.5) and the credits still ahead (36).
  4. Read the GPA at the top and the line that says what you need on the credits ahead.
